Another disappointing Filipino bishop

MANILA, February 12, 2010 (CBCPNews)—The fact that the Chinese Lunar New Year falls on Valentine’s Day this year should all the more remind Filipino-Chinese Catholics to integrate their faith and Christ’s Gospel values to their culture and tradition. [Sounds like Anscar Chupungco talking to me!]

Abra Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian [at left] reminded the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Community that the gift of life and love should always be attributed to God as the ultimate source of all creation—a basic Catholic teaching that he said should not be compromised given the nature of Chinese culture.

“As we celebrate the Chinese New Year on Valentine’s Day this year, let’s pray for more blessings of life and love and share it generously to others. Let us pray for God’s abundant blessing of good health and prosperity and joy in life. Without God we are nothing so let us think of him for this year of the metal tiger,” Jaucian said

The prelate, who is the national spiritual director of the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth, [hmmm.  I once worked as a volunteer catechist to this ministry and may I say...it is a ministry full of "fringe benefits".  Lots of excursions, parties and the small red envelopes.  You get the point.] said there is nothing wrong with observing the Chinese Culture but Chinese Catholics should keep a prayerful life and be faithful to their Catholic religion.

God is present in other religion and culture [MODERNISM ALERT!] so the belief in Feng Shui, Astrology, and praying at Buddhist temples should be perceived as instruments that all draws us closer to God. [*&*^%#$@#!$%@&^&@*!$_&!!!!!!!!  This is a Catholic bishop my friends, and he is saying that tarot cards, Ouija boards, and the whole damn Occult is OK because it draws us to God!  Jesus Christ is not the same as Buddha or Shiva!  CAN YOU NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BISHOP?!?!   Can someone send a petition letter to Rome and report this, this, this......!  Please do us a favor!!! And we expect a new Filipino cardinal with this kind of bishops we have?  I can tolerate politically active bishops but this!  Give me a break!] As such, we discourage too much dependence on culture especially up to the point that faith in God is compromised,” he said. [I just got a migraine attack reading this.  At first he says ok, a few keyboard strokes later it's not ok.]

Jaucian also urged Filipino Catholics to understand and respect the Chinese’s way of life, adding that their Catholic faith should keep them united amid cultural differences.

“We should respect each otheir’s culture. Let us extend respect, understanding and solidarity to our Chinoy brothers and sisters so we can live harmoniously with each other,” he added. (Kris Bayos)

The belief in the respect of religion and that we all are worshipping the very same God is a Masonic creed.  Masons are respectful of any type of religion you practice. BUT...the problem lies here.  Buddha will never be the same as the Lord Jesus Christ, nor pagan worship be anywhere near a Catholic Mass or even the Rosary.

SO NO BISHOP JAUCIAN!!!  FENG SHUI WILL NEVER GET YOU CLOSER TO GOD!  IT WILL MAKE YOU CLOSER TO THE FENG SHUI MASTER WHO WILL MAKE A QUICK BUCK OUT OF YOU FOR TRUSTING WHICH CHARMS TO USE, WHERE TO PUT THEM... WHEN TO TRAVEL, OR WHEN TO GET MONEY FROM THE BANK.  IT IS PLAIN STUPID!!!  WHERE IS GOD IN GEOMANCY?!  IN THE OCCULT?!

YOU ARE SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!  ARE YOU EVEN A CATHOLIC IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

The Philippines is not so Catholic after all.

No wonder we don't have much cardinals...

  1. Good grief! Science (especially ASTRONOMY) is a better way to bring us close to God than Feng Shui or Astrology!

  2. My apologies po, but forgive me for posting or speaking up. While I cannot comment on the contents of our beloved Bishop's homily as I am not present that time, but I think this is rather too much in terms of correcting.

Forgive me, but di po ba dapat fraternal correction ang sagot sa ganito? It just pains me to see that ang nangyari pa rito is minura mo siya and you even went to the point of doubting his being a Catholic. If your comment is not a deliberate attack on the beloved bishop then I do not know what it is.

I am speaking as someone who knows him very well. I think fraternal correction would have been the best course of action.

For one, the article in itself has its flaws, to quote, "The prelate, who is the national spiritual director of the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth."

I would like to reiterate and stand by this position that the beloved Bishop IS NOT THE NATIONAL SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR OF THE FILIPINO-CHINESE CATHOLIC YOUTH. BISHOP LEOPOLDO JAUCIAN IS, HOWEVER, THE NATIONAL COORDINATOR OF THE CHINESE-FILIPINO APOSTOLATE OFFICE OF THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE OF THE PHILIPPINES. THE FILIPINO CHINESE CATHOLIC YOUTH (OF WHICH I AM A MEMBER) IS UNDER THE SAID OFFICE AND WITH THE EPISCOPAL COMMISSION ON YOUTH WITH ITS OWN NATIONAL SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR.

Nakakalungkot po, while I laud your efforts to stand for the Catholic faith, if at the expense of acting completely out of prudence and charity towards others, then we have failed to live the very virtue with which we are measured by our Lord.

I hope this will be taken in a positive light.

    1. Jan Richmond, so basically you corrected me for the flaw of the writer of the article but not with the statement of your beloved bishop making the Catholic Faith equal with all other faiths.

Now, you are the one who deserves fraternal correction, since I suppose you are a layman like I am. Your bishop needs to be sent to answer what he said to Rome.

      There are his fraters.

    2. And I will not take back what I said against your bishop.

He acted and spoke foolishly! He deserves to be called out for his errors!

You think a layman can just go right in his office and tell him his errors? You think I did not and am not doing that?

Poor Jan Richmond. You think I don't get to mingle with our bishops most of the time?

    3. Hi Richmond,

Never mind the comments as this may lead to nowhere. Its just now that I have read this article and its so sad to have our CFA bishop being attacked..

Just read the text in its totality to grasp the context of Bishop:

"God is present in other religion and culture so the belief in Feng Shui, Astrology, and praying at Buddhist temples should be perceived as instruments that all draws us closer to God. As such, we discourage too much dependence on culture especially up to the point that faith in God is compromised"

Put it in the context as to how Fr. Matteo Ricci evangelized China. What bishop would like to tell us that we can "Christianize" the practice of Feng Shui, Astrology or even praying at Buddhist temples.. He followed in his next line that "We discourage too much dependence on culture especially up to the point that faith in God is compromised"

Remember one instance of a Chinese practice "Ancestral Veneration". Fr. Matteo Ricci was even banned by Rome to practice some rituals during his time. This really took a very long time in getting Rome's approval. Now it has already a "Christian" dimension, we Chinese-Filipinos has practiced this regularly, thanks to Fr. Matteo Ricci's example.

Putting again to Bishop's context, if we in the Latin Rite, will put so much emphasis in "our culture" then we put our faith in God to a compromise. Classic examples are "Extreme Liturgists". Sometimes they tend to "think" they are so correct and having a mistake in the rite could make the rite "invalid". If this is how we think, then we are no less than the Pharisees in the Bible. That's why, I reiterate, we put our faith in God to compromise.

Well, so much has been said already, me, Bishop Pol and some of the members of the Chinese-Filipino community are in constant meetings for workshops in order to grow in our faith. No other reason why we, as Chinese-Filipinos has grouped and formed ourselves because we can understand better, share our problems together and eventually, we can become a spiritually mature catholic, which is our ultimate vision.

    4. Put in context? The bishop is endorsing divination to find God! Where is that in the Catholic Catechism. You may find a lot of ways to squeeze out your favorite bishop in this predicament but the fact of the matter remains that Buddha will NEVER EVER BE EQUAL TO JESUS CHRIST.

  3. What I meant was sana po kinausap niyo siya about it. Then maybe we got the clearer context. Were you able to speak to him about this matter?

Another thing po is if the article in itself has taken the words of the beloved bishop out of context. Knowing him po, he can be very clear with what he says.

"And I will not take back what I said against your bishop."

So kahit po yung pagmumura ninyo you won't take it back? It's your opinion naman po.

    1. To TPC who misunderstood what was said... even if you got some points right why take it literally and personally

"Now, you are the one who deserves fraternal correction, since I suppose you are a layman like I am. " "He acted and spoke foolishly!"

"YOU ARE SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT! ARE YOU EVEN A CATHOLIC IN THE FIRST PLACE?!"

If you are really a layman as you said to be. then whats a true catholic and whats the right thing to do then ? Because the way I see it a layman doesn't talk like that crap. The catholic church it self kahit mern mga bawal open namn sila sa changes and respect customs, traditions, religions of others and such etc. Only a closed mindedness will not understand what acceptance is and respect of others should be.

"YOU ARE SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT! ARE YOU EVEN A CATHOLIC IN THE FIRST PLACE?!"

So now I get this line back to you, ikaw ba are you ? you are the one who should be questioned instead as a disappointment a layman even good grief!!! who is the Heretic now ?

    2. Charleston, you are like that mad man from Davao who'd worship the ground his beloved bishop walks on even though that bishop may be teaching something contrary to the Faith.

      Pathetic follower.

Even Bishop Jaucian will cringe at the fact that this article will be sent to Rome! Now tell him that! Ha!

  4. "He acted and spoke foolishly! He deserves to be called out for his errors!"

Assuming po na mali, then I agree, he deserves to be called out for his errors, but is such a manner really the most charitable act?

    1. Get your acts straight first Jan. Ano ba talaga ang nirereklamo mo?

You think my words are offensive? That is your opinion.

But I will call a spade a spade.

And since you are friends with your bishop, why don't you show this page to him.

      And tell this to him:

      BISHOP JAUCIAN! YOU HERETIC!

    6. So?

I call out a Filipino bishop for endorsing heresy.

      So be it.

BISHOP JAUCIAN YOU ARE A HERETIC!

    7. I am a proud catholic myself yet I respect the religion and beliefs of others. But you...

      So be it then.

The fact you are saying this that you are a racist on religions and beliefs of others where respect don't exist. Calling others HERETIC as if you are the catholic church itself what a laugh

    8. Charleston Lim,

When a bishop in front of you calls Buddha as equal to Jesus Christ, what do you call that statement of the bishop?

      Delete
  5. TPC that I know, in a way its wrong if that was said anyone would be upset.

But think about it openly if you put it on another view point its just giving respect to the other religion or belief.

In a sense its just right because the catholic church we love and cherish is also open for all. Just think about it Our Lord Jesus Christ as a universal church and one True God. In this world we have different religions and beliefs but all of them came from one and same origin pointing to Jesus Christ.

Its Jesus Christ represented differently among races just because of the traditions, beliefs, distance and those sort of differences like liberal, conservative or modernize that we know.

You mentioned the bishop called Buddha as equal to Jesus Christ but its because they are just one and the same interpreted differently, just like other God who is also Jesus Christ with a different name and teachings. The bishop might be right or wrong and even I might also but just think about it. He was just pointing out that they are the same one Lord Jesus Christ to us.

Why don't we just pray and let God judge then decide who is right and wrong and it will turn out to be the best for all of us. I don't mind whatever the outcome will be. Just don't put to much into this one. You got many good articles here but of all the pointing out mistakes on certain people, priest or a religious head is one that am against. We are just humans after all we comment but never judge because the one that can is our Lord Jesus Christ.

      - Then you just agreed with me.

But think about it openly if you put it on another view point its just giving respect to the other religion or belief.

      - Openly? Disrespect? What the hell are you talking about? A Roman Catholic bishop, the successor of the Apostles just told everyone else that Buddha and geomancy is ok with Jesus Christ?!

In a sense its just right because the catholic church we love and cherish is also open for all.

      - Yes and NO. The Church is open to all who wants to listen to her voice but it is not open to these kinds of novelties. Feng shui will never be accepted in the Church get that!

Just think about it Our Lord Jesus Christ as a universal church and one True God. In this world we have different religions and beliefs but all of them came from one and same origin pointing to Jesus Christ.

      - WHAT THE HELL?!?!? My friend, you are in the same league as that bishop. Not all religions are the same, and Jesus Christ is not found in all religions! Buddha is not an expression of Jesus Christ, nor is Vishu, Krishna, L. Ron Hubbard, or Satan. NEVER EVER! So it is not. Not all religions are the same. Where in the world did you get that? Show it to me in the Catechism!

      - Heresy! Not all religions came from the same tree.

      - After presenting your defense of the heretic statements of the bishop by professing to believe in the same. The bishop maybe human but he is duty bound to be careful with what he teaches and pronounces! He is tasked to preserve the Faith!
