The Spanish persecution of Catholics happened during the time of the young Fr. Josemaria Escriva.
It was shown in the movie "There be dragons".
One of those beatified is a Spanish who was born in the Philippines, the Capuchin martyr Blessed Jose Maria de Manila, born to Spanish parents in Manila. His father was the last Spanish mayor of the City of Manila and received his education at the Ateneo, Letran and UST, all of which then were located in Intramuros.
Thanks for this post!
ReplyDeleteActually I took the name of this saint as my blogPost name to thank God and honor all these holy Spanish friars who spent their life in spreading the Gospel in the Philippines.
I have to note that NOT ALL Spanish friars were evil as depicted in the Rizal novels. Even Rizal himself have had many friends among them. But because of his ill-adventures from some Dominicans who not only mistreated him but also took away the properties of his family in Calamba.
In fact, several martyrs who were companions of Sts Lorenzo Ruiz, Paul Miki, Pedro Calungsod were all Spanish. I believe San Pedro Bautista died with Paul Miki too in Japan for the Faith. Now, God has again blessed us with another Blessed. Deo Gratias!
For the residents of Calapan, Bacolod, StoTomas Batangas, Sta Cruz Manila, Paranaque, and Las Pinas, you may not be aware that a holy Agustinian has lived among you before the close of the century. He came here as a profess religious, was ordained a priest here, and was assigned to these various posts. Every where he went, the people would protest his departure when he was called for another mission. Finally he was called back to Spain to be the superior of their province. But it was not long before he applied for the Colombian mission, later became its Apostolic Administrator, and later its Bishop.
Having contracted cancer of the throat, Ezekiel Moreno OSA returned to Spain where he died a saintly death.
San Ezekiel Moreno, ora pro nobis!
Beati Josephi Mariae Manilensis, ora pro nobis!
Sancti Laurentii Ruiz ac Petri Calungsod, orate pro nobis!
