Rabbi Defends Honor Of World War II Pope
The professor of history and political science at Ave Maria University in Naples discussed his new book, "The Myth of Hitler's Pope," to about 40 people at Molly McHugh's Pub.
Dalin defended the reputation of the late Pius XII by presenting documentation gathered from church and state archives throughout Europe.
He suggested that Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, honor Pope Pius XII as a Righteous Gentile.
The presentation was sponsored by Theology on Tap, a young adult ministry of the Church of the Resurrection in Lakeland,
Claims about Pius XII's mythical collaboration with Hitler got their start in 1963 with the publication of a play called "The Deputy," by Rolf Hochhuth. The playwright later admitted that the claims in the play were contrived. [Maybe that's the reason why the real experts were quick to debunk the claims of Dan Brown lest a lie often repeated and undebunked becomes the truth.]
Dalin said Pius XII was praised by leading Jews of his day, such as Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Israel, Israeli Prime Ministers Golda Meir and Moshe Sharett, and Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann, for his role in saving Jews. [Now let us see if those against Pope Pius XII can make a list of those who were critical of the pope during the war and immediately after the war. Wait...what's that?.... Jiminy? Are you chirping?]
"When fearful martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror," said Golda Meir in 1958 speech, "the voice of the pope was raised for the victims."
In his book, Dalin covers the history of a plan by the Nazis to kidnap the Pope; the covert agenda of the authors of the conspiracy theory which held that Pope Pius XII was in league with Hitler [Ow shucks Dan Brown. Lost another book and movie opportunity. Dang!]; and the complicity of Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem, the leader of the 1929 massacre of Jews in Hebron, and the mentor of and inspiration of Yasser Arafat.
"Pius XII and especially John Paul II were the heirs and exemplars of this long and venerable philo-Semetic tradition within papal-Jewish relations," Dalin said. [Yes rabbi!]
Research on the role of Pius XII during the Holocaust reveals that he was not "Hitler's pope," but a protector and friend of the Jewish people at a moment in history when it mattered most, Dalin said.
Guys like Dan Brown and other conspiracy theory nut jobs aka novelists would hate to read this news. Even ultra orthodox Jews fuming mad at Pope Benedict and Pope Pius XII regarding the latter's role during World War II are definitely incest at reading this. Why would Jews who lived through the war be the one's to praise the pope and those who were not even there, be raising hell to condemn the pope? It's like listening to bible thumping preachers who held the Bible, "felt" the anointing of the Lord, and then claims that he is the anointed one to prepare us for the last days. And that his interpretation of the Bible is the valid one and the others are either lacking or completely adulterated. Hear that Felix Manalo? The farther you are from history, the more obstructed the truth becomes because of people like Dan Brown and John Cornwell.
The burden of proof now shifts to those claiming that Pope Pius XII did not do enough to stop the Holocaust.
I sent you an email (thepinoycatholic@gmail.com, right?) - hopefully you got it. I've read your blogs all the way to the beginning and it's quite impressive. Yes, I hope to start my own soon (been bit busy). :)
