What Fr. Geny Diwa does not want to happen in the Philippines

Fr. Genaro Diwa is the liturgical architect of the illicit Misa ng Bayang Pilipino....YET...like his nuknukan ng kayabangan disciple Jeff V., they insist on holding this "Mass" and move everything in their power to prevent the Traditional Mass aka the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite suppressed in dioceses and parishes across the Philippines.

Yes, I know the phone calls and "reminders" to bishops and priests not to associate themselves with the SSPX groups.  Summorum Pontificum is supportive os the SSPX?  Idiots.

Here is an excerpt of an article in Catholic World Report about the growth in Mass attendance in traditionally Bible belt areas in the United States.  Take note that this article was published in December of last year:

The Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei keeps a comprehensive list of locations in which the traditional Latin Mass is available. At last count, in the 191 dioceses in North America, there are about 485 parishes that offer Mass in the Extraordinary Form with some frequency (monthly, twice-per-month, or weekly), with 335 parish locations offering it weekly.  [Take note.  There is a national group coordinating all these efforts to promote the Traditional Latin Mass.  Here in the Philippines...never mind.]

In North America there are 75 parish locations that offer daily access to the Extraordinary Form. Of those locations, 38 are in the care of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter and 13 are provided for by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. [Papal-right groups that cannot establish a base here in the Philippines because.........yes, that's right.  Good 'ole Genie is there to prevent the groups.]  That leaves 24 locations run by dioceses or religious communities (such as the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago) where the Mass in the Extraordinary Form is offered daily.

One such parish is thriving in what may seem to some to be the least likely of places—what is often referred to as “the buckle of the Bible Belt,” Greenville, South Carolina. Prince of Peace Catholic Church, located in Taylors, SC, is a diocesan parish with nearly 2,000 families and an evangelical liturgical approach that is beginning to draw national and international attention.

Not only is this parish attracting families interested in regular access to traditional liturgy and the sacraments, it is beginning to be recognized by even the non-traditional Catholic audience as a beacon of the “New Evangelization,” due to the number of converts and reverts it draws into the Catholic Church.

Prince of Peace also has a burgeoning school, a round-the-clock adoration chapel, and numerous other flourishing apostolates.

CWR: What kind of response—either positive or negative—have you received from other priests in the diocese or elsewhere?

Father Smith: A lot priests, when they hear about what we do—it may perhaps sound very strange to them for some reason. But when they actually come and visit and experience firsthand how both forms are [celebrated as similarly] as possible, while still respecting the unique differences, and they see the participation and the faith of the people—when they see all of this in action, then it makes more sense to them.

No one else in our diocese is doing it the way that we are, but we also have a history in our parish that other parishes have not had. There are places where they would love to have the Extraordinary Form more often, but they don’t have the same level of desire—as shown over a period of 12-plus years now—that our parishioners have

I assure you.  If he were a priest of the Archdiocese of Manila, he would have been sent to another assignment, exiled, courtesy of the great liturgist Fr. Genaro Diwa.  Oh yes, it's true!  It's really true!

The reverent liturgy is attracting people.

Tradition is always the counter-revolution to the worldly

Take a look at this.  Has this produced much converts in the past or it has sent Catholics to join more Evangelical groups since they have better dancers, better singers, better musicians and better acoustics in their houses of worship that do not disguise itself as a "church" unlike Catholic "churches" that disguise themselves as churches when they are desperately trying to become like auditoriums?

Don't expect anything good from him about the liturgy.  You leaves it all to the "experts".

Ask these kids what they think of the Mass and all they say is that the Mass is where they need to dance and perform.

New Evangelization!  Teach kids what the Mass is really NOT about the Mass and make them believe it IS what it seems to be.  A show!

Now you know why Fr. Diwa hates the TLM and why he works hard to PREVENT it from being celebrated in the Archdiocese of Manila.

His creative liturgies will fall flat on its face once people see the difference of what authentic liturgy is especially when the Ordinary Form is celebrated the way it was intended in the liturgical books!

Conversion?  Who needs them when even atheists can go to heaven?!

Solemn High Mass in the presence of the Diocesan Bishop

I received these wonderful updates on my Facebook account about the Solemn High Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Mark Sese on the occasion of his second sacerdotal ordination last May 1, Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, at the High Altar of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Pasig.

Rev. Fr. Elijah Lim, OFMConv. and Rev. Fr. Jojo Zerrudo served as deacon and sub-deacon of the Mass.

As you can see in the photos below, Most. Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara, DD, is seated on his cathedra.

I heard that the Mass was well attended.

The "problem" with the Traditional Mass

A pesky problem with the Traditional Mass is this: (courtesy of Mulier Fortis blog) and in WDTPRS.

“Of course, just when you get a decent MC (Master of Ceremonies) trained up, he leaves. We’re losing about three soon… That’s the trouble with the Old Mass… it keeps causing vocations…!”

I can vouch for this.  I have known a couple or more devotees and acolytes of the Traditional or EF Form of the Holy Mass who end up entering the seminary or convent.  And their reason for entering?  Their love for the liturgy.  They have entered traditional orders, mind you!

Can we get the same reaction from those devoted to the Tambourine Mass at SM Megamall?

Well, uhm, just asking.

I am wondering if they'll ever say:

  

"I want to become a priest because I want to have my own TV Mass and do powerpoint presentations and bring a smile to the face of the people as I made their Mass more lively and animated!"

Pfft!

You still wonder why these liturgical abusers still do not want to follow the simple rule:

"Say the Black, Do the Red."

Manila does not want any candles or an altar cross.   You don't put candles on a TABLE and you don't put a cross in the middle.  It obscures your view of the priest.

Yup, look at him...instead of worhsip HIM.

And I thought Manila has a world-renowned liturgist who....

You get the drift.

And I even don't have to study at Paul VI, or at MST or Euntes or SVST to know that.

PS:  I hope that what our priests are doing in the reorientation of the sacred in the public celebration of our Liturgy expresses our deep faith as Catholics and our deep longing to bring back the sense of the sacred into our public worship.

I hope that this is not a momentary political ploy like dancing to what the fiddler plays...at the moment!

Remember that this altar arrangement has been in existence for hundreds of years until Antiquarinists of San Beda and Paul VI insists otherwise.  They always bark at you to go back at the Last Supper.

Thank goodness to the Varsitarian for putting this out.  I met a Dominican priest who promised me to give a copy of the proceedings on the UST talk about the New translation of the Missal and the ongoing Liturgical Reform.

I have heard how the old guy ranted and here is the Varsitarian's take on what happened.

A BENEDICTINE liturgist has criticized Pope Benedict XVI for trying to turn back the clock in bringing back the old liturgy, saying the growing movement promoting a “reform of the reform” was threatening to derail changes brought by Vatican 2.  [And aint those changes soooo beneficial to the Church, right Fr. Anscar?  Go to the Muslim lands and find out for yourself!]

“Dark clouds are forming ominously on the Western horizon. They move hurriedly and decisively toward the direction of the sun that burns radiantly in the sky. They cast upon it stronger shadows to hide it from view. Suddenly it is dusk, before the appointed time. In reality of our day, the realness is called by the passing clouds. This cannot put the clock back to yesterday’s evening hours,” Fr. Anscar Chupungco, O.S.B. said in his speech during the 2nd Annual Edward Schillebeeckx Lecture last February 22 at the UST Hospital auditorium.  [The lecture was named after a dissident Dominican theologian.  And here the liturgist who got booted out of Sant Anselmo is ranting.  Will tell you the personal reasons why this is not a purely liturgical or theological matter.]

The forum discussed the Vatican’s recent approval of the new English translation of the Mass, which takes effect on Advent in the United States.

Other priests in the forum, such as Fr. Mitchell Joe Zerrudo of the Diocese of Cubao and Jesuit Fr. Timoteo Ofrasio, welcomed the changes in the English version of the Roman Missal, which adhere to the Latin and are closer to the biblical texts. [And you might wonder why the old man is ranting!]

“In general, the new translation of the Roman Missal will be more formal and theologically deeper, more provocative emotionally and intellectually,” Ofrasio told students of the Central Seminary and the Ecclesiastical Faculties.  [And that is something wrong that Chupungco is hitting hard?]

Ofrasio said there was a need to preserve the Mass and guard against tendencies to tinker with the liturgy. [Uh-oh.  The dreadful Misa ng Sambayanang Pilipino comes to mind.  That awful liturgy is a complete concoction from the cauldron, ehem, desk of THAT liturgist which an old cardinal, who was promoted by THAT GUY UPSTAIRS to become HIS VICAR ON EARTH, prevented, according to my sources in Rome, from being allowed to be said in the Philippines.  Oooooo!  No matter he is so cranky!  Imagine the stress he was since April 2005.  Ha!]

The traditionalist movement in the Church, which is critical of changes in the Mass following the Second Vatican Council, scored a victory [Huh?] in 2007 when the Pope issued the “motu proprio” Summorum Pontificum. The decree liberalized the use of the Traditional Latin Mass, or the Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal, in which the priest and the congregation offered Mass facing one direction.  [because John Paul II ordered a commission of cardinals to study if the Second Vatican Council or Paul VI juridically abrogated the Missal of Pius V.  The findings of the commission?  No law was put out banning the old Missal, not even Vatican II.  And guess who is one of the cardinals?  Yup.  Joseph Ratzinger.]

The 1970 New Order of the Mass released by Pope Paul VI in the wake of Vatican 2 permitted the use of the vernacular in the liturgy, with the priest facing the people.  [which is an abuse because Sakosakong Kutsilyo, uhm, Sacrosanctum Concilium said "may" not "must" face the people.  Look at the rubrics of the 1970 Missal.  It instructs the priests when to face the people.  What does that mean?]

Last year, the Vatican approved the new English translation of the Mass of Vatican 2, which, critics claim, contained a number of errors. Pope John Paul II last revised the New Mass in 2000, but the English edition had to wait until the release of translation guidelines in 2007 in 2007.

Chupungco, head of the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in Malaybalay, Bukidnon, [petri dish of liturgical dissenters in the Philippines] placed the changes in the context of the liturgical “reform of the reform” pushed by Benedict XVI even before he became pope. [Ha?  What?  Who?]

He said there was a need to distinguish between papal decrees and the “theological musing” of Joseph Ratzinger, who, as head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope John Paul II, wrote the celebrated book Spirit of the Liturgy, which decried abuses in the aftermath of Vatican 2.  [So does that change the fact that the guy who had liturgical musings is now sitting on Peter's Chair?  GROW UP!  Wait till you become Pope!  Which...you know...will..NEVER HAPPEN!  Because..tick...tock...tick...tock...As Father Z says, the biological solution is catching up on you.]

In the book, Ratzinger said changes in the liturgy undermine the sacrificial nature of the Mass as worship, placing the focus on the priest and tending to celebrate the community.  [No wonder the fans of Fr. Chupungco hate candles and the crucifix on the altar because it abstracts the face of the priest.  No wonder Fr. Chupungco does not want ad orientem aka ad Dominum worship here in the Philippines!  Did you come to the Mass to look at each others faces from across the table?]

But Chupungco, who had served as president of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome and consultor to the Congregation for Divine Worship and Congregation for Catholic Education, [Wow!  With all those credentials, they think he looks better and more credible than being the Prefect of CDF, theologian, cardinal and pope?  If ever you were an HR guy, who would you hire?  NEXT!]  said these moves were coming at the expense of “active participation,” pointing out that the old prayers and language had long been discarded. [NOT!  Here he goes again.  For the likes of Chupungco and his ilk, active participation is bordering on the laicization of the liturgy, a blurring of the roles of the ordained and the baptized.  The laity almost always becomes like the priest.  Ever see the army of EMHCs in your Sunday Mass?  He thinks this is all nostalgia.  Well, it is not.  Lex orandi, lex credendi.  What you see is what you get.  No wonder more Catholics today do not even value life or even support the RH Bill, because nothing today is held sacred thanks to the work of Chupungco and his padawans who trivialized the Mass and made it more of an entertainment showcase and a social gathering rather than becoming a silent but active witness to the Sacrifice of Calvary!]

It’s too simplistic to claim that before Vatican 2, many churchgoers became saints by simply going to Mass, he said. [Who ever said that?  Remember that there are a lot of bad guys and good guys before Vatican 2 as well as after Vatican 2.  Non sequitur!  NEXT!]

“The agenda is an attempt to retrieve the discarded liturgical practices and paraphernalia, sometimes at the expense of active participation,” he said. “This movement has entered the Philippine shores, those that manifest the use of the defunct Latin language [Huh?  Law schools use Latin.  The scientific community uses Latin.  Well, maybe an interdict will be even issued to this dissident in Latin.  How is that for defunct?  Who is now defunct huh?] and the singing of distant generations. It is no longer a requirement to understand what is said, sung, or read,” Chupungco said.  [No longer required?!?!  THEN WHY ARE OUR SONGS AND PRAYERS IN THE VERNACULAR?!?!?!  Or because he is ranting because liturgical innovators like him will be out of a job?  Remember, the Traditional Mass is precise in its rules and rubrics.  No room for creativity and dancing, aka active participation.  See where this is all coming from?]

Chupungco said liturgical tradition is not necessarily Church Tradition (with the capital “T”) that must be preserved through the ages. The need to emphasize the sacred nature of the Mass need mean involve turning back the clock, he added.  [Here is the paradigm of these Bugnini spawns.  Everything that happened before Vatican 2, bad.  Everything that they did, especially after Vatican 2, good.  So, for them the liturgical innovations that crept into the Traditional Latin Mass does not help to emphasize the sacred nature of the Mass so his brand of Mass and inculturation (belch!) of the liturgy makes the Mass more, God help me write the next word!, SACRED?  Good grief!]

“The liturgy does not need to be backtracked to its early context that was understood after the Council of Trent, which the Pope is trying to revive, but should be “in the atmosphere of mysterium tremendum et fascinans (a mystery that creates fear and yet fascinates).”  [Like his Misa ng Sambayanang Pilipino?  NOT!]

Meanwhile, Ofrasio, a professor of systematic theology at the Loyola School of Theology, said it was the Church’s prerogative to promote “renewed evangelization.” 

Pointing to various liturgical innovations, he said the Mass is not “free [for priests] to tinker with and change depending on their understanding.”  [Special delivery and served to Fr. Anscar!  BOOM!]

“The Mass is a treasure entrusted to them by the Church which they must cherish, guard, and preserve,” Ofrasio said. “The Mass that they celebrate is not their Mass. It is the Church’s, given to them, entrusted to them by God through the Church. [The priest] is just a steward.”  [Compare it with the Misa ng Sambayanang Pilipino!]

Zerrudo, parish priest of the Lord of the Divine Mercy Parish in Quezon City, said: “We should not be afraid of the coming of the new translation.”

He said the new translation of the liturgy also called for a new translation of music for the Mass using the Latin liturgical text.

“Much of the liturgical reform is really academic – the books, the prayers, the rites were studied, revised, and rearranged by experts,” Zerrudo said.

Zerrudo, whose parish offers the Traditional Latin Mass every day, is an alumnus of the Central Seminary.

The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan is taking the lead, implementing some changes in the Mass effective March 9, Ash Wednesday.  [And why is the CBCP silent on this?  Because Fr. Diwa is sitting as the Executive Secretary of the CBCP Commission on the Liturgy.  And, oh, he is Fr. Chupungco's protege.]

“The English translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal will soon receive the approval of the Holy See to be used for the entire Philippines. Even before the actual implementation of the new English translation, some phrases and responses in the Order of the Mass have been decided on by the Apostolic Instruction Liturgicam Authenticam foremost among which is the translation ‘Et cum spiritu tuo’ which was translated in the 1970 Missal as ‘And also with you,’” Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a circular last February 11.

As a result, the new response to the priest’s greeting, “The Lord be with you,” is “And with your spirit.”

Before the consecration, when the priest says “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God,” the people’s response is “It is right and just,” instead of “It is right to give him thanks and praise.”[The Cebuanos actually got this right.  But why the Tagalogs did not?  Because the Tagalogs based it on the wrong English translation and not on the Latin.  Guess the Cebuanos know Latin more than the Tagalogs?  But...but...but...isn't that DEFUNCT?  HA!]

Is he suffering from a case of cognitive dissonance or it is simply a case of an axe to grind against the man who cost his job?

If he is really the great liturgists that he is, then what has he done to stop liturgical abuse in the Philippines, huh?

The reform of the reform reaches Davao!

Davao, one of the best places in the Philippines that I love to go to!

Yup, folks.  I too was dumbfounded when I saw this.  And I am pretty sure the liberal Caucasian missionaries in Davao would be wincing in pain at seeing a retablo rising again.

And here is a view of the retablo and the cathedra.  The archbishop is kneeling for the Litany of the Saints.  This is for the ordination of six deacons of the archdiocese.  Take note!  He is wearing the pallium!  Take note!  I guess you can recall why I point this out because I had been blogging about an archbishop who ordains his clergy without wearing the pallium.  No folks, it does not effect the sacrament.  I am just wondering why he is not wearing it when he is performing a function as a metropolitan. Well, anyways...

No. I am not talking about the Church of the Gesu in Rome.  That's the mother church of the Jesuit order.  I am talking about the starship enterprise, err..., that new church in the campus of the Ateneo de Manila University.

Look at this picture below

That is the revered and imminent Jesuit liturgist, Fr. Tim Ofrasio, assisting the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Edward Adams, as Masters of Ceremonies at an ordination ceremony at the Church of Gesu

You can see that the altar was prepared by Fr. Ofrasio using the Benedictine Altar Arrangement.  Notice the seventh candle.

Shawn Tribe of the New Liturgical Movement recently posted an interesting interview in Il Giornale, by Andrea Tornielli of Cardinal Cañizares Llovera, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship: entitle "Basta con la messa creativa, in chiesa silenzio e preghiera (Enough with the Creative Mass, in Church, Silence and Prayer).

The title alone speaks for itself.

The Cardinal admitted that "Catholic liturgy lives "a certain crisis," and Benedict XVI wants to form a new liturgical movement that brings back more sacrality and silence in the Mass, and more attention to beauty in chant, sacred music and art."

In it the Cardinal confirmed that "a new division in our congregation dedicated to "Art and Sacred Music" at the service of the liturgy. This will lead us to offer soon a criteria and guidelines for art, song and sacred music. As well we offer as soon as possible criteria and guidelines for preaching."

Will we see less of creativities?

less of candles on the floor and crucifixes and tabernacles on the side?

Uh-oh...someone's liturgical agenda will certainly go down the drain!

What about the Liturgical Research?

What about the books?! The books! They won't sell anymore!

Now, folks, this is the right kind of inculturation!  Not within the Liturgy as some would want it to be.

There is no such thing as a Filipino inculturated Mass or an American inculturated Mass.  The Mass is the Mass is the Mass wherever part of the world you go.  That was how it was before Vatican II, but sadly it was radically changed after liturgical experts who unabashedly trumpet their diplomas around saying "I am the liturgist.  You are not."

Creativities and inculturation are done OUTSIDE OF THE MASS not within.

Take the example of the Senakulo or Passion Play.  The Sinulog Festival and other similarly related rituals unique to Filipinos.  It was done outside of the Mass!  So LEAVE THE MASS ALONE!

 "As part of the continuing formation we provide to our lay collaborators in the liturgical ministry, the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission is organizing a two-day Seminar on the General Instruction of the Roman Missal for our Parish Liturgical Masters of Ceremonies.  The program of formation will include a discussion of the history, theology, pastoral considerations and liturgical directives on the celebration of the Eucharist.  The said seminar will be held on March 6 and 13, 2010 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Arzobispado de Manila. 

Considering the great help of the Parish MC’s in ensuring order and solemnity in our liturgical celebrations, it is important that they undergo on-going formation for their growth in knowledge and commitment.  We encourage every parish to send participants to the seminar.  We request the participants to bring a recommendation letter signed by their respective Parish Priests.

Seminar fee will be PhP 150.00 per day inclusive of the handouts."


LITURGY CONFERENCE ON THE LITURGY OF HOLY WEEK AND EASTER TRIDUUM
" In response to the requests of many of our brother priests and in our desire to assist you towards a meaningful preparation this Lenten season, the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission is organizing a liturgy conference with the topic THE LITURGY OF HOLY WEEK AND EASTER TRIDUUM.  The study session will deal with the history, theology and pastoral considerations of these annual celebrations. [Through the interpretations of.... drum roll please!]

The conference will be held on March 8, 2010, nine o’clock (9:00) to eleven thirty (11:30) in the morning at Bahay Pari, San Carlos Pastoral Formation Complex.  Rev. Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB, [TADAAN!!!!] present Director of the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy, will be our resource speaker.

Let us take advantage of this opportunity to update ourselves [there you have it brothers and sisters!  aggiornamento 1969!  Are these people under hibernation for a long time or what?]  and deepen our knowledge [these "liturgists" claim that the pre-Conciliar are too cerebral so they "made" a liturgy that we can all understand.  Now, why do we need something like this to deepen our "knowledge"?] in the liturgy so that “the great mystery of our Redemption be celebrated in the best possible way” [best possible way...hmmm...sounds like inculturation to me!] and that our people “may participate in it with greater spiritual advantage” (Paschalis Solemnitatis, [sic]no. 5).

How many priests in fact asked for this?

Or is it a desperate attempt to curtail the liturgical renewal of Pope Benedict XVI starting with Summorum Pontificum, then with the new translations of the Romal Missal?
