Most priests (and some nuns and other religious) will reason out that wearing something (like the habit, the cassock, LITURGICAL VESTMENTS!!!) is not necessary, that these does not make a good Christian. What they don't know is that these "religious apparel", aside from being products of history, actually have theological significance in them such that wearing them will remind the wearer of his faith. The cappa magna above is the reminder of God's vast power and majesty and the wearers jurisdiction. It is removed during liturgical functions, in front of the congregation, to symbolize that all these luxury is nothing compared to the One who will be sacrificed in the altar.

***(not related to the photo) So happy though that even Lasalle does not have that much Catholicity, the Brothers always wear their habits.
