GULP Report: A rare moment in history
I almost fell out of my seat when I saw this photo. One of the rare times the cardinal-archbishop of Manila is seen wearing his pallium. He does not wear it when he ordains his new priests. This was taken during the Chrism Mass in the Primatial Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in historic Intramuros, Manila.
Another thing, he did not preach from the chair during the Chrism Mass which is also odd. Usually local ordinaries preach from the chair especially if they are saying Mass in their own Cathedral.
Notice the six candles. They are placed at the old high altar of the Basilica which is, thank God, survived the wrecknovation of the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately, no candles on the free standing altar itself. It is on the side. Marks of Chupungco, eh? The papal nuncio is to the right of the cardinal.
At least the Protestant-like altar-table of the 1970's and 1980s has been replaced by a Catholic stone altar which depicts the Lamb of God in modern but yet still traditional style.
ReplyDeleteFour candles on the side of the altar reflect use in the Sarum traditions. But the Catholic Church in the Philippines is from the Iberian tradition not pre-reformation England.
If Cardinal Rosales doesn't want to wear his pallium at all times, then he doesn't want to carry the yoke of Christ at all times. The Pallium and its Eastern Christian version, the omophorion is a sign of the yoke that bishops have to take.
The Sarum rite also has 2 candles on the altar.
ReplyDeleteNot placing candles on the altar is an obvious deviation from the ancient practice and was NEVER done in the Latin Rite.
This is a liturgical innovation and must be STOPPED.
why don't they follow the Bendictine style altar like in Cebu?
ReplyDeleteHeres a link to the interiors of the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City

As you can see the huge tabernacle is at the side.

The altar arrangement is similar to the Manila Cathedral. The candles are on the floor. But the tabernacle is shoved off at the side so that some Lay Eucharistic Ministers will hover like vultures in font of the tabernacle to get the sacred species...
