Incubus: The Rock Band or...

The rock band Incubus is coming to Manila for a night of concert.

Have you wondered where they got their name?

A quick Wikipedia later...
An incubus (nominal form constructed from the Latin verb, incubo, incubare, or "to lay upon") is a demon in male form who, according to a number of mythological and legendary traditions, lies upon sleepers, especially women, in order to have intercourse with them. Its female counterpart is the succubus. An incubus may pursue sexual relations with a woman in order to father a child, as in the legend of Merlin. Religious tradition holds that repeated intercourse with an incubus or succubus may result in the deterioration of health, or even death.

Just wondering... why would you name your group with a rapist demon?

PS: Catholic Exorcists, based on the cases they have encountered, say that those who possessed often times are fans of heavy metal groups.

Incubus, named after a demon, heavy metal music.

Follow this sign!

And more importantly, this one!

The One being symbolized by the image Who speaks through the one holding His Image!

  2. They're not heavy metal, Sir. They even started off as a funk band. But anyway, I'm not watching it since I'll not benefit from it.

  3. @Mary Jane - That is the reason why I have the blog. You are most welcome.

  4. Good Sir:

I have been a fan of the band -- which isn't heavy metal as Ian had pointed out -- for well over a decade.

While the band's name is demonic there are no overt references to satanism in any of their songs. I admit it may be too loud or noisy for some and that they do occasionally use profanity but that may be the extent of their being offensive.

Has their music affected me negatively? Not at all. I actively volunteer for several NGOs that work with the youth and in building communities. I oppose the RH bill (on both secular and ecclesiastic grounds). I serve at mass as a eucharistic minister.

By no means am I a model Catholic but I can tell wrong from right because I was brought up in an environment(through my family, friends, schools, and church) that taught me to think critically and respected my independence to act responsibly.

This equation of demon by name = demon by deed is not a simple analogy; it a misleading over-simplification, sir. One that is offensive not only to the band but to the people to whom this gross malapropism is aimed.

Music is music. How it affects people may be a moral concern but if you have not listened to it, dare I say, that it is un-Christian to pass judgment?

  5. Good grief PJ. You are so hurt.

    Understand my post.

The name association is a warning for well-meaning Christians.

"taught me to think critically and respected my independence to act responsibly" - be careful where you tread my friend. That is how modernists start their lines. Atheists I have debated online use that statement all the time.

And if you are implying that I did not think critically about this post, please read it again.

  6. PJ,

And let me share to you the lyrics of Incubus' song, Drive:

Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much I'll let the fear
    Take the wheel and steer

It's driven me before and seems to have a vague
    Haunting mass appeal
But lately I'm beginning to find that I
Should be the one behind the wheel

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes yea
    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there I'll be there

So, if I decide to waiver my chance
    [ From : http://www.elyrics.net/read/i/incubus-lyrics/drive-lyrics.html ]
To be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine
And hold my own and drive?
    Aah ah ooo

It's driven me before and it seems to be the way
    That everyone else gets around
But lately I'm beginning to find that when
I drive myself my light is found

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes yea
    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there I'll be there

Would you choose water over wine?
    Hold the wheel and drive

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes yea
    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there I'll be there

    - Message?

I'll do whatever I want with my life.

Where is the Church in all of these? Where is your faith in all of these?

Is that how critical thinking works?

I believe you when you said that you know wrong from right, I really do. But read the lines of this song.

I tells you to think and act independently.

    Yes and No for me.

The Church and our family taught us right and from wrong, but the Church will not force you to act against your own will. Only tyrants and dictators do that.

But the Church reminds you of the consequences of actions, both good actions and bad actions.

  7. And quite frankly, I will not patronize a person, or a group that is named after a demon, no matter how good the intentions are.

Remember that some of the worst things that ever happened in the world, started with the best of intentions.

  8. secular music compromises the Catholic Christian Faith we have in Christ. remember, most of the secular music has it's own subliminal messages that penetrates in every consciousness of listeners and that affects greatly in a listener's life.

Obedience in the Lord. a true sign of worshiping God and standing on His side and not a compromiser of Faith. be choosy in listening music. choose what is from God and not of from the devil.
